Students in Ms. Ruschell's Forensics class recently had an extraordinary educational opportunity when they visited the Hamilton County Coroner's Office and Crime Laboratory in Blue Ash. The facility tour, led by both the retired and current directors of the crime lab, provided students with a comprehensive look into the real-world applications of forensic science.
The state-of-the-art facility features a unique design with glass-walled laboratories, allowing students to observe active evidence analysis as they toured. Each lab area is equipped with educational displays, including television screens showing examples of evidence typically processed in each department.
During the visit, students explored various specialized areas including the evidence intake and storage facilities, toxicology lab, DNA analysis section, and trace evidence laboratory. The tour also included stops at the coroner and investigative offices, giving students insight into the administrative aspects of forensic work.
A highlight of the tour was the ballistics section, where students entered the actual firing range used by forensic experts. They learned about the sophisticated equipment used to test firearms and examine bullets and shell casings found at crime scenes. Students also visited the viewing room used by law enforcement during autopsy observations, providing a realistic glimpse into the collaborative nature of forensic investigations.
This educational experience offered students valuable insights into potential career paths in forensic science and criminal justice, while reinforcing classroom concepts with real-world applications. The visit demonstrated how various scientific disciplines combine to solve crimes and serve justice in our community.
