On Thursday, January 30, 2025, Detective Eric Leininger from the Reading Police Department visited Mrs. Ruschell’s Forensics class to discuss crime scene investigations and evidence collection. He provided an in-depth look at the proper procedures for collecting and packaging different types of evidence, including fingerprints, ballistics, drugs, and DNA. Drawing from his extensive experience as a detective, he shared real-world examples to illustrate the importance of accuracy and attention to detail in forensic investigations. He also emphasized the collaborative nature of forensic work, explaining that law enforcement often consults specialists in areas like blood spatter analysis to ensure thorough and accurate casework.
Detective Leininger also highlighted the evolving safety protocols in law enforcement, particularly regarding drug evidence. He explained that officers no longer conduct field tests on suspected drugs due to the dangers posed by substances like fentanyl, which can be highly potent and hazardous upon exposure. His insights provided students with a realistic understanding of modern forensic procedures and the challenges investigators face in the field. Through his engaging discussion, Detective Leininger helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world forensic science, offering students valuable knowledge about the complexities of crime scene investigation.
