Branden Barker, a senior at Reading Junior/Senior High School, is known for his speed on the track, but this past Sunday, February 23rd, it was his quick thinking and swift action off the track that made him a hero.
While working his shift at Skyline Chili, Branden noticed retired firefighter Phil Hogan in distress. Hogan, who was enjoying a meal, began choking on a cracker. Without hesitation, Branden sprang into action, using the first aid and CPR skills he learned in his Introduction to Healthcare course at Reading High School to dislodge the food and restore Hogan’s breathing.
“Branden saved my life,” Hogan said. “He stayed calm, reacted instantly, and did everything right. I owe him everything—I truly believe he’s my hero.”
Beyond the classroom and his job at Skyline, Branden is a standout athlete. Branden has been a member of the track team for the past 5 years. His talents have earned him a spot on the Indiana Tech track team, where he will continue his athletic and academic journey in sports management after graduation.
Phil Hogan’s words echo the sentiment of the entire Reading community: “Branden is more than a student-athlete—he’s a lifesaver.”
