Mrs. Ruschell’s class recently had an exciting opportunity to visit Shepherd Chemical, where students got a firsthand look at real-world chemistry applications. The trip began with a visit to Shepherd’s wastewater treatment area, where students learned about the company’s process for precipitating metals from wastewater. These metals are then recycled by other companies, while the filtered water is safely released into city drains after undergoing multiple treatment steps.
Next, students heard from three chemists and a chemical engineer about their educational and career paths. One chemist shared an inspiring story of overcoming challenges—he didn’t graduate high school until joining the military, then went on to earn his chemistry degree at 40. Now, he has been with Shepherd Chemical for 20 years! The students were especially engaged in hearing the diverse ways these professionals found their way into the field.
The tour continued inside the chemical plant, where students saw the production of copper (II) nitrate, a compound used in car airbag systems. The students were fascinated by the precision and processes involved in creating materials that impact everyday life.
To wrap up the visit, Shepherd Chemical treated the students to a delicious lunch, making the experience even more memorable. Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive—they left inspired and excited about the possibilities in STEM careers!
