Students from Reading High School had an exciting opportunity to explore careers in the medical field during a visit to The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health. The day began in the auditorium with an introduction to the hospital’s rich history and an overview of the many ways students could get involved through volunteering. Hospital employees from various departments shared their career journeys, providing insight into the diverse paths that led them to their current roles. Hearing firsthand experiences from professionals in fields such as nursing, radiology, pharmacy, and environmental services gave students a deeper understanding of the many career possibilities within a hospital setting.
Throughout the day, students rotated through three interactive stations. During the hospital tour, they explored key departments, including radiology, pharmacy, culinary, and environmental sciences, where they gained firsthand knowledge of hospital operations. At the career fair, students engaged directly with hospital employees, learning about job responsibilities, education requirements, and career pathways. One of the most exciting parts of the day was the simulation lab, where students practiced inserting IVs into a medical manikin arm, cleaning simulated deep wounds, and performing CPR to stabilize a manikin’s heart rate. The day concluded back in the auditorium with a fun quiz, where students demonstrated their newfound knowledge and won prizes. This hands-on experience at The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health gave Reading High School students a deeper appreciation for healthcare careers and inspired many to consider futures in the medical field.
